Game Boy
The Game Boy (Japanese: ゲームボーイ) is a handheld video game console produced by Nintendo. It was released on April 21, 1989 in Japan, July 31, 1989 in North America and on September 28, 1990 in Europe.
Monochrome games can be played by inserting cartridges into the system.
It is part of the fourth generation of video game consoles. It was succeeded by the Game Boy Color including support for colourised video games including many games that will mainly only work on a Game Boy Color or later model.
The system was highly successful, in particular it was sought after after the success of Pokémon franchise which featured games for this system debuting with Pokémon Red and Green Versions in Japan (localized overseas as Pokémon Red and Blue Versions).
Variations[edit | edit source]
- Play It Loud!: A Game Boy model with a coloured case, known in Japan as Game Boy Bros. Despite the coloured case it otherwise works the same as an ordinary Game Boy.
- Game Boy Pocket: A smaller, lighter Game Boy model requiring fewer batteries.
- Game Boy Light: A revision of the Game Boy featuring a electroluminescence backlight. It was released on April 14, 1998 only in Japan.
