Fan translation
Fan translations or fansubs are unofficial translations of media not officially released in the language it is fan translated. It could also be an alternative translation to an official translation. In the context of comics, there is a related term known as scanlation which involves scanning a manga or comic, and re-releasing it in an edited form, in another language.
Examples[edit | edit source]
Note: This list is newly started and is not a general view of the subject
- The anime of Onegai My Melody (franchise) has been fan-translated by fans, and a team known as Eggplant Fansubs played an important role.
- Various Sanrio related video games have been fan-translated, or at least have had a fan translation attempt, such as Snoopy Concert, Sanrio Cup: Pon Pon Volley and Sanrio Timenet: Kako-Hen and Mirai-Hen.
Legality[edit | edit source]
Fan translation is an argument for understanding/communication of works which would otherwise be obscure due to a language barrier, as well as documentation and fair use (in a limited form); however, reproducing the entirety of copyrighted works in another language may be seen as a form of copyright violation.
